Despite the fact that some people think it's a silly joke, Bong is my actual first name... And knowing the funky definitions of the word in America, it's probably worth mentioning that it was given by my godfather who happens to be Korean. The hanja he chose for the name is 鳳 which means the 'phoenix'.
Now, I am the eldest in my family and when my sister started calling me "Big Bro", we naturally thought of the nickname that has now become part of my branding. Funnily enough, 'Bong' also means "big brother" in Khmer: បង.
And like many Asian countries where citizens see themselves as one big home, people in Cambodia sometimes use it with strangers. The nickname also sounds like Big Bang, just as a reminder of how small we are in the cosmic scale but also the tremendous impact we can have on one another.
"Where are you from?" is the question I get the most. My mysterious looking face comes from French, Japanese and Lebanese roots. My purpose on social media is to gather amazing individuals from all around the world to discover their culture. Because I strongly believe, we can all have fun learning from all the countries!
When it comes to academic background, I got a Master's degree in journalism at the University of Montreal (UdeM) in Canada, and a Bachelor's degree in international affairs at Sorbonne Paris Cité University (USPC) in France. I also had the privilege to be an exchange student at Seoul National University (SNU) in South Korea.
